The City of Patras initiated a test planning process in order to develop concepts for the urban segment of the new Patras-Athens railway connection. The main goals were integration of rapid trains, light rail vehicles and freight trains on the same route and setting effective impulses on urban development. The concept proposes a stepwise construction of the tracks through the municipal area in which every step offers improvements for the different modes of transport. This allows advancing the construction of the railway line while retaining the flexibility to react to future developments.
