Hernesaari is a peninsula located in the south of the capital of Finland Helsinki. This island has been used mainly by industry until now. The task was to develop a master plan as part of an international cooperative procedure for calling in expert opinions, with the idea of creating a sustainable urban land-use for the 32 ha area. Furthermore the design intention of the team was to combine a mixed area with partly maritime land-uses for the 35 ha gross floor area. The development structure and street spaces were designed in accordance to the nearby inner-city quarters.
